| Skill | What it means | Level needed |
|---|
| Mill Safety | Works a running sawmill floor to the mill's safety rules: wears the required PPE every shift, keeps clear of moving lumber, saw lines and pinch points, recognizes rollout and kickback hazards, and stops the line or calls for help instead of reaching into equipment. | |
| Lockout/Tagout | Applies the mill's lock-out, tag-out and try-out procedure before any saw change, knife change, guard removal or jam clearing, hangs their own personal lock, and never restarts or crosses a machine another worker has locked. | |
| Guarding & Jams | Keeps machine guards, chain covers and nip-point barriers in place, and clears a jammed deck, chain or saw only after the machine is stopped and locked out, replacing every guard before the line is turned back over. | |
| Noise & Hearing | Works a full shift in a mill running roughly 95 to 105 dBA: wears dual hearing protection correctly, keeps to the hearing conservation program including the annual audiogram, and uses hand signals or radio where speech will not carry. | |
| Mobile Equipment | Moves safely around forklifts, log loaders, lumber carriers and yard trucks: stays in marked pedestrian lanes, makes eye contact and gives a hand signal before crossing, and operates a lift truck only after separate employer certification. | |
| Log Scaling | Reads a log for scale: measures small-end diameter and length, applies the mill's log rule (Scribner Decimal C in the Northwest) to get gross board-foot volume, and deducts for visible sweep, rot and defect. | |
| Species ID | Identifies the species running through the mill (Douglas-fir, western hemlock, ponderosa and lodgepole pine, western red cedar, white fir) from bark, end grain, colour and smell, because species drives the sort, the grade rule and the dry schedule. | |
| Log Deck | Feeds the log deck safely: sorts and turns logs, keeps the deck loaded without bunching, watches for rollout and for embedded metal, rock and hardware, and stops the feed for a hang-up rather than climbing onto the deck. | |
| Debarking | Runs or tends the debarker: sets feed rate and ring pressure for log diameter and season, keeps bark, dirt and rock out of the saw line, watches for stalls and plugged bark conveyors, and reports rings or tools that are tearing wood fibre. | |
| Headrig | Works the headrig on primary breakdown: sets or tends the carriage and knees to the setup the sawyer prepared, watches band strain, wander and lead, and calls the cut when taper, sweep or a dog mark is about to cost a board. | |
| Resaw & Gang | Tends the resaw or circular gang that breaks cants into boards: loads and aligns cants, watches for saw deviation, snaking and burn, and reports thickness variation before it fills a sort bin. | |
| Edging | Runs or tends the edger to take wane off both edges of a flitch: reads the board for the highest-value width, sets or accepts the optimizer's saw positions, and keeps edgings clear of the outfeed. | |
| Trimming | Tends the trimmer: reads each board for the split, defect or wane that sets the trim, accepts or overrides the trimmer optimizer, and trims to standard even lengths without giving away footage. | |
| Green Chain | Pulls green chain at line speed: lifts and stacks wet dimension lumber into the correct sort by size and grade, holds pace with the crew without pushing past safe lifting, and calls out when the chain needs to slow. | |
| Sorting & Stacking | Sorts lumber into bins by size, grade and length and builds a square, even package: lines stickers up over the bunks, keeps course counts right, and bands and tags the unit so it will travel and dry without twisting. | |
| Kiln Drying | Knows what the kiln is doing to the lumber: loads and unloads charges with stickers aligned, reads the schedule and the dry-bulb / wet-bulb setpoints, and recognizes over-dry, case-hardened, checked or stained stock coming out. | |
| Moisture Testing | Checks moisture content on dried lumber with a pin or pinless meter, corrects the reading for species and temperature, samples across the package rather than one board, and records it against the customer's MC spec (KD15, KD19, S-DRY). | |
| Planing | Runs lumber through the planer or moulder to surface it to finished size: feeds straight and end to end, watches for chip-out, snipe, raised grain and knife marks, and shuts down for a knife change rather than running dull steel. | |
| Lumber Grading | Grades dimension lumber against the published grading-agency rule by finding the worst defect in the piece, assigning the grade, and marking it so the sorter drops it in the right bin; in this region the rule is written by the West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau, headquartered in Tigard, Oregon. | |
| Lumber Defects | Names the defects that drive grade and knows what caused each: knots and knot holes, wane, shake, check, split, warp (bow, crook, cup, twist), skip, blue stain, decay and compression wood. | |
| Tally & Measure | Measures and tallies lumber accurately: reads a tape to the sixteenth, checks actual against nominal thickness and width with a caliper, converts to board feet, and records tally by size and grade against the production sheet. | |
| Hydraulics Basics | Reads a mill machine's hydraulic system well enough to work safely around it: identifies pump, reservoir, cylinder, directional valve and accumulator, spots a leak, low level or hot oil, and reports it before a carriage, turner or kicker starts to drift. | |
| Saw Changing | Changes a band or circular saw safely: locks out, opens the guards, handles the saw without damaging teeth or tips, mounts and tensions it to the filer's setup, and turns the machine back over with every guard replaced. | |
| Saw Condition | Tells a good saw from a bad one on the run: identifies cracked, dull, missing or lost-tip teeth, heat colour, snaking and lead, checks guides and coolant flow, and pulls the saw to the file room before it wrecks the cut. | |
